Vietnam's first batch of MBBS students enrolled in 2021–2022. They will be among the earliest groups to appear for the NEXT (National Exit Test) — India's unified medical licensing exam. While there are no FMGE/NEXT results yet from Vietnam graduates, the pattern is clear from other countries: students who prepare strategically from Year 1 perform dramatically better than those who start in Year 5.
This guide is for current Vietnam MBBS students — Years 1 through 4 — and for families making the decision to apply. It covers what the NEXT exam looks like, how to prepare during your MBBS, and why the Vietnam curriculum is better aligned with it than most people realise.

1. What Is the NEXT Exam?
The National Exit Test (NEXT) replaces the older Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) for students graduating from foreign medical institutions. It is conducted by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Full Name | National Exit Test (NEXT) |
| Conducting Body | National Medical Commission (NMC) |
| Who Must Appear | All medical graduates — both Indian and foreign — to practise in India |
| Format | NEXT Step 1 (written MCQs) + NEXT Step 2 (clinical/practical) |
| Syllabus | Based on the NMC Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum |
| Attempts Allowed | No restriction (per current NMC guidelines) |
| When to Appear | After completing MBBS degree and internship |
2. How Vietnam MBBS Curriculum Aligns with NEXT
This is important and often misunderstood. The NEXT exam tests subjects that are core to any MBBS curriculum worldwide — Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry in preclinical years, and Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Paediatrics in clinical years. Vietnam universities teach all of these.
The key advantage of Vietnam MBBS over, say, Russia or China: clinical training begins earlier. At Aieraa's partner universities, students begin hospital postings from Year 3. More clinical exposure = more case-based learning = stronger NEXT Step 2 preparation.
| NEXT Subject | When Covered in Vietnam MBBS | Depth |
|---|---|---|
| Anatomy | Year 1 | Full dissection lab, cadaver-based learning |
| Physiology | Year 1 | Comprehensive; includes clinical correlations |
| Biochemistry | Year 1 | Full syllabus covered |
| Pathology | Year 2 | Systemic + general pathology |
| Pharmacology | Year 2 | Comprehensive drug study |
| Microbiology | Year 2 | Full lab component |
| Community Medicine / PSM | Year 3–4 | Field postings included |
| Medicine, Surgery, OBG, Paediatrics | Year 3–6 | Hospital-based clinical rotations |
3. Year-by-Year NEXT Preparation Strategy
Year 1 — Build Strong Foundations
These are the "hard" subjects that most FMGE/NEXT candidates say they wish they had studied more carefully: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry. These three together account for a significant portion of Step 1 questions.
- Read Gray's Anatomy or BD Chaurasia alongside your university textbook
- Use Physiology by Guyton and Hall as your primary reference
- Keep a "high-yield facts" notebook for MCQ revision later
- Watch Dr Najeeb's lectures on YouTube to reinforce concepts
Year 2 — Master the Core Para-clinical Subjects
- Pathology: Robbin's Basic Pathology is the gold standard; supplement with Harsh Mohan for Indian MCQ patterns
- Pharmacology: KD Tripathi remains the most NEXT-aligned Indian pharmacology textbook
- Microbiology: Ananthnarayan & Paniker; focus on clinical scenarios
- Start solving FMGE/NEXT past papers from Year 2 — even if you can't answer everything, it builds familiarity
Year 3–4 — Clinical Subjects Begin; Integrate Theory
- Keep an active clinical log — every case you see, note the diagnosis, key symptoms, treatment. This directly helps NEXT Step 2
- Start Medicine by Harrison's (abridged edition) or Davidson's
- For Surgery: Bailey & Love short practice of surgery
- Attend every hospital posting — the clinical exposure at Vietnam partner hospitals is your biggest asset
Year 5–6 — Dedicated NEXT Preparation Alongside Internship
- Enrol in a dedicated NEXT/FMGE coaching program in India during semester breaks — many online programs allow you to study from Vietnam
- Full-length mock tests: aim for at least 2 per month
- Marrow, Prepladder, or DAMS are the most popular platforms for Indian medical students
- Focus revision on high-yield topics: Medicine (25%), Surgery (15%), OBG (10%)
4. Recommended Books and Resources
| Subject | Primary Book | Supplement / MCQ Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Anatomy | BD Chaurasia (Vol 1–3) | Vishram Singh, Snell's for MCQs |
| Physiology | Guyton & Hall | Ganong's Review |
| Biochemistry | Harper's Biochemistry | DM Vasudevan for Indian MCQs |
| Pathology | Robbins Basic Pathology | Harsh Mohan |
| Pharmacology | KD Tripathi | Tara V Shanbhag |
| Microbiology | Ananthnarayan & Paniker | Apurba Sastry |
| Medicine | Harrison's (abridged) / Davidson's | Mudit Khanna |
| Surgery | Bailey & Love | Das's Textbook of Surgery |
| Obstetrics & Gynaecology | Dutta's Obstetrics | Sakshi Arora for MCQs |
| Paediatrics | Ghai Essential Paediatrics | OP Ghai |
| Community Medicine | Park's Textbook of PSM | AH Suryakantha |
5. Online Platforms for NEXT Prep (Usable from Vietnam)
- Marrow — The most popular FMGE/NEXT prep platform; includes video lectures and daily questions
- Prepladder — Excellent for subject-wise deep dives
- DAMS Online — Strong mock test series
- YouTube: Dr Najeeb Lectures — Best free resource for foundational medical science videos
- Amboss (International) — Good for clinical case-based preparation
6. The Advantage Vietnam Students Have
Students from some foreign medical schools complain about poor clinical training. That's not the case at Aieraa's partner universities. All four partner universities have affiliation with major hospitals where students do clinical rotations from Year 3:
- Dong A University — affiliated with Dong A General Hospital (600+ beds) and Da Nang Hospital
- BMTU — affiliated with Buon Ma Thuot General Hospital
- Dai Nam University — affiliated with hospitals in the Hanoi region
- Mekong University — affiliated with Can Tho General Hospital
NEXT Step 2 is a clinical/practical exam. Students with genuine hands-on hospital experience are far better prepared for it than those who only studied from books.
